The Netzwerk Group from Buende, Germany

This group of high school students, German teenagers who study about and do research on the Holocaust, was being hosted by Temple Sinai and the Temple Sinai Youth Group as part of an ongoing exchange between the two groups. Their teachers and mentors who traveled with them were very proud of their willingness to add this group into their high school requirements, as it is seen as an extra-curricular activity. They had a full week of programming, including doing a moving and inspirational presentation during Temple Sinai's Shabbat Service Friday, July 15th.

Brass had the opportunity, through Audrey Friedman Marcus, to speak with these students on Monday, July 11, 2011, on a panel of esteemed Holocaust Survivors. Eric Cahn, Lea Schreiber and Oscar Singer served on the panel representing the Holocaust survivors, while Brass served on the panel as the only Second- Generation Holocaust Survivor there. The students asked many questions regarding what it was like growing up with a survivor and how it felt being a 2nd G. The students were exceptionally educated on Holocaust history, especially that of their city of Buende, Germany, with 50,000 citizens. They have done research and have studied what has happened to the Jews from Buende during the Holocaust and hold to the belief that it should never happen again, demonstrated through their actions and felt within their hearts.

Karen Z. Brass is seen here, after the 3 hour panel discussion, in an orchid suit on the right, next to the Founder of The Netzwerk Gruppe on the far right, Christina Whitelaw. On the far left in front is Holocaust Survivor, Lea Schreiber. This group of High school students impressed Brass with their deep feelings, thoughtful questions and willingness to share the vision of  each being a Standupster®!
I had the honor and privilege to travel to Berlin, Germany in August of 2014 to attend the 26th Annual World Federation of Jewish Child Holocaust Survivors and Descendants Conference. I was asked to join their Executive Board-such an honor! Following the conference I joined Angela Bruening in Bunde and had the opportunity to speak at The High School and to The Society of Remembrance and Action group. Details to follow with more photos!
